Urgent Care’s Future: Older Patients, Fewer Clinicians

A recent McKinsey Week in Charts highlights a clear reality: the U.S. population aged 70+ is growing rapidly, just as clinical workforce shortages persist, widening the gap between healthcare demand and capacity.

For Urgent Care, the implications are immediate:

  • Older patients are using Urgent Care more, with higher complexity and escalation risk
  • Staffing shortages are structural, not temporary
  • Productivity, not headcount will determine access
  • Technology (including AI) is a critical tool for extending capacity, not a “nice to have”

Bottom line:
Urgent Care will increasingly serve as a front door for an aging population. Operators who adapt by redesigning workflows, supporting clinicians with technology, and preparing teams for more complex care will be better positioned to sustain access, quality, and affordability.
