Alleviating the shortage will involve hitting the issue from multiple angles, many of which are out of our hands. This article from Becker’s outlines all of the obstacles facing the access to care issue in the United States.
- Shortages in rural areas are even more compounded.
- Scope of care adjustments are required.
- Patient confusion on settings will grow as new care models are launched (micro-hospitals, concierge care, etc.)
- Burnout will lead to more clinicians working reduced hours
- Length of time and cost for medical school is a barrier.
No surprises here but this will lead to greater access to care issues, especially for rural America.
